About Desiree

Desire Coleman, is a Marriage and Family Therapist working toward licensure in Pennsylvania. She joined the Urban Healing group because she knows how important mental health services are, and has a strong desire to ensure that they are accessible to everyone. Desiree is a native of Upstate, NY and graduated from The University at Albany (Bachelor of Arts in Communication), Boston University (Master of Arts in Criminal Justice), and Northcentral University (Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy). She became a therapist after working in the nonprofit sector for over fifteen years and seeing how important mental health is in achieving life goals and working toward overall happiness. She is dedicated to both personal and professional growth, and is constantly seeking learning opportunities that will allow her to be most effective with her clients by investing in her own continuous education.

Desiree has had extensive training in Narrative Family Therapy (NFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), with a goal to become certified in both. Desiree has learned to combine techniques from both theories to assist clients struggling with a variety of challenges. As a Marriage and Family therapist, she has also been extensively trained in family systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy, which allows her to assist clients in gaining insight into the ways in which our culture, families, peers, society, education, and environment have contributed to behaviors and patterns that are both helpful and contrary to our mental well-being.

Desiree is passionate about assisting families and individuals to build stronger relationships and connections with one another, and learning and building on skills they can use to cope with life’s challenges and obstacles. She has experience working with depression, anxiety, trauma, and phase of life struggles. She works with couples, families, and individuals, and is an active member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
